How Benzoin Is Used in Modern Industry
Benzoin resin is used far beyond incense. Here are its main industrial uses and the grades each industry usually looks for.
Benzoin is the hardened resin of the Styrax tree. Its scent is warm, sweet, and slightly vanilla-like, which is why many industries seek it out.
1. Perfume
In perfumery, benzoin is used as a fixative. It slows the evaporation of other notes so a fragrance lasts longer on the skin, while adding a warm, sweet accent.
2. Cosmetics and personal care
Benzoin extract appears in soaps, lotions, and aromatherapy candles, both as a fragrance and for its soothing reputation.
3. Pharmaceuticals
Tincture of benzoin, a solution of benzoin in alcohol, has long been used in topical preparations and inhalants. Benzoin is also a natural source of benzoic acid.
4. Incense and aromatherapy
This is one of the oldest and still one of the largest uses. Benzoin lumps are burned as incense worldwide, for aromatherapy and room fragrance.
Grades each industry looks for
| Industry | Usual form |
|---|---|
| Perfume and cosmetics | Large, clean, light-coloured lumps (top grade) |
| Pharmaceuticals | Clean and consistent, often processed into extract |
| Incense | Mixed sizes and powder (medium to lower grades) |
We sort benzoin into grades A to D by lump size, colour, and cleanliness. State your industry's requirements when you submit a PO.
